WELCOME TO THE NATION’S CAPITAL
Welcome to the District of Columbia (DC), informally known as Washington, DC. Founded on July 16, 1690. We are named after the first president George Washington and Columbia came from America's feminine identity. We are a federal territory, not a state, on the east coast of the United States.
Washington, DC is made up of land given from Maryland and Virginia, and sometimes referred to as the "DMV". DC used to be a diamond, but Virginia changed her mind and took back a few cities (Arlington & Alexandria). DC is divided into four quadrants - Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. The origin of the quadrants is The Capitol Building and separated by Pennsylvania Ave (NE/SE), the National Mall (NW/SW), and Capitol Street (North & South).
Washington, DC is also known as "Chocolate City" based on its history of being predominantly African-Americans beginning in the late 1950's. Our city is very liberal and inclusive of all races, religions, creeds, sexual orientations, genders, and nationalities.
We have 70 museums and 30 national parks packed within our 68 square mile territory.
